Tipping your house cleaner is one of those small decisions that ends up causing big anxiety. Should you tip every visit? Just at the holidays? Cash or app? And how much is the right amount?

Here is a clean, no-nonsense guide based on what we hear from Hudson County clients every week.

Short answer

Tipping is appreciated but not required. If you tip, a common range is $10 to $20 per visit, or roughly 10 to 20% of the cleaning total. Many clients skip per-visit tips and instead give a larger holiday tip once a year.

Is tipping required?

No. Cleaning prices already include labor, supplies, and travel. A tip is a thank-you for great work, not part of the bill. That said, cleaners almost always remember who tips, and it can build a great long-term relationship.

Tipping each visit

If you have a recurring cleaning (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) and you want to tip every time, $10 to $20 per visit is typical for a standard apartment in Hudson County. For larger homes or deep cleans, $20 to $40 is more common.

Tipping just at the holidays

Another popular option: skip per-visit tips and give one larger tip in December. A common guideline is the cost of one cleaning as a holiday tip. So if your regular cleaning is $180, a $180 holiday tip is generous and very normal.

When to tip more

Consider tipping above the usual range when: the home was significantly dirtier than normal, you asked for extra work like inside the fridge or oven, you had a last-minute or same-day booking, the team brought extra crew to finish on time, or you are moving in or out and the job took longer than expected.

How to leave a tip

Cash left in a visible spot with a short note is the most appreciated. Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App also work if you ask your cleaner for their handle. If a team of two or three cleans your home, leave the tip for the team, not just one person, unless you are recognizing specific extra work.

Tipping mistakes to avoid

A few things that tend to backfire: leaving a tip but not telling anyone, so it gets missed; tipping with a check that takes days to clear; forgetting the holidays entirely after a year of great service; or assuming your monthly fee already includes a gratuity (it usually does not).

Bottom line

Tip what feels fair for the work you received. If you are happy with your cleaner, even a small, consistent thank-you goes a long way, and a holiday tip once a year is one of the kindest things you can do.
